First of all, I’m not a huge fan of Katy Perry. I like some of her early hits, but less and less of each new era. By 2017? The thought of picking up Witness never crossed my mind. I’d seen the music video for the new single, “Bon Appetit”. Pretty good and fun… until the rap guests Migos showed up. Sorry, not really to my taste.
Eventually, I finally got around to giving the album an actual listen. No expectations, just on a whim. Did my assumptions hold up? Well, mostly. I’m still not a fan of the “Bon Appetit” rap. A very large majority of songs are pretty lackluster and honestly below average. “Swish Swish” was worse than I remembered. “Chained To The Rhythm” is well intentioned, but falls flat. My overall impression of the album is one of blandness, uninspired choices, and a few truly cringey moments.
To my surprisement, not everything is wothless. I actually think the house track “Deja Vu” works pretty well. Not perfect, but danceable and catchy. Pulls me in and is a very solid pop song. Completely overlooked in favor of the poor singles chosen. Also “Tsunami” is a good, track with clever lyrics, seductive delivery, and interesting instrumentation. Very cool actually.
So not a total loss. I can’t recommend the entire album by a long shot, but the two songs I noted are great by themselves. Maybe as part of a mix of playlist.
