Certainly a fine album, but an odd duck to be sure. As far as debut records go, it’s hard to argue that this isn’t a strong entry. Compared to what is to come, however, everything seems too quaint. That isn’t Empty Sky’s fault, but is suffers none the less.
A lot of people point to “Skyline Pigeon” as the star song. I’d like to point you attention to the title track and “Western Ford Gateway” instead. The former is an intensely atmospheric epic. The latter is an echoey precursor to everything John and Glam itself are know for.
Take this out of context and you’ll appreciate it all the much better. Great album!
