While Cocker has some original tunes represented here, what will justifiably be remembered, is the title cover. It’s hard to top the musical excellence of The Beatles, and this is one attempt that exceeds!
The rest of the album is a good listen, populated by soulful singing and bluesy-rock oriented tunes. Of lesser note are the Dylan covers of “Just Like a Woman”/”I Shall Be Released” (good, but meh) and “Don’t Let Me Be Missunderstood”. I think the premier version of the latter has to go to The Animals, but I’ll go into that digression in a Song Wars at some point.
Overall, a very strong debut, and a pinacle he’d find nearly impossible to repeat. But, that’s anything but a damning appraisal.
The album cover is pretty horrifying, to be honest, but it does capture the energy of the man! Very strongly recommended.
