A lot of people love this album, and for sure it is good. As great as its reputation claims? Probably not. Granted, it is as luxurious as any Hayes production, his voice is as wonderful as ever, and it plays fine in the background. To me, some of the songs are a bit too pretentious with the long spoken word segments that drag them down rather than effectively building tension. “By The Time I Get To Phoenix” is the worst offender. Worth a listen, absolutely. Placing it in the best of ’69 or Hayes’ discography? Not to me.
