The beginning of an era- dedicated taping section! From this point onward, fans could purchace tickets for admission and openly tape Grateful Dead shows. A great deal of the legacy the Dead retained today stems from this decision. Tapes had been made since the band’s eariest days, but secretly, and often the quality suffered. Baking into the community an understanding that these tapes could be traded but not sold was bold but completely in line with the ethos of the scene, even if it made record companies shudder. Now, the live history of the Dead became more redily available and complete. Sure, that is probably a bit pat and mythologized version of the story, but true enough in the sceme of things.

As for the show itself? Well, to be honest, for such an historic occasion (in hindsight), it is very average for the era. Songs have that speedy ’84 sound. Jerry is a little nasally slurry/shouty. Sloppy but fun.

Also of note- the poster for this run is one of my all-time favorites! Drawn by Bay area psych artist Rick Griffin, how cool is the skeleton pharaoh? And that font? R.I.P. and thank you!

Hope you enjoy the show and short history!
