Conditionally a great album. Prince was often at his best taking chances. …This is not a safe album. It careens from one wild idea to another with guest appearances on many of the tracks. I’ll be honest; I only peripherally know the guests and can’t speak to their respective music, but enjoyed their inclusion here. It holds together. Barely.
When it works, Hitnrun Phase One is a wacky bubbling pot of crazy ideas fused together brilliantly. At times, the ideas sag under their own weight. Fortunately, tohse moments are fewer between.
At its heart, this is a really fun and interesting album. Especially for late era Prince, I’d highly recommend. It’s a blast. I was disappointed that the version of “Fallinlove2nite” on the album is not the duet with Zooey Deschanel (considering the other featured artists). You can get that single seperately. As oddball as that colaboration sounds, it is worth having. If you haven’t seen the New Girl episode where the gang meets Prince, look it up. It is everything you want it to be and more.
