Good album, even if it is a bit misleading. This is actually a compilation of earlier, disconnected work, repackaged. The label was a bit cynical, and as Coltrane became more popular, took old recordings from when he was a sideman, and formed this album under his name. The background being what it is only matters so much, as the music as a whole is very good and surprisingly cohesive.

Not the first Coltrane album I would recommend, but actually far from the last. Great listen for his late 50s sound.
